HASHWRITER.ORG FEATURED POSTS

The word "Live" in Live Rosin vs. Live Resin, denotes the use of freshly harvested and frozen cannabis materials, rather than the traditional use of dried and cured cannabis material, but this is just about where the similarities cease between the two latest extracts. While this was intended to be a visual post only, here comes the words... Live Resin often employs trim, trash, scrap, and even  contaminated mat erials , frozen just prior to extraction (if at all). Live Rosin on the other hand, requires some of the highest quality cannabis materials, gently harvested and trimmed by hand, before freezing the material right on the farm. Lower grades of frozen material that aren't yielding for Hash and Rosin, are the best case scenarios for Live Resin quality. The worst case scenarios include the use of material tested and deemed contaminated, which head to the chemical solvent lab for "remediation." The Evolution and Understanding One of the easiest ways to understand and remember both of these products is to understand the products that led to their development. Understanding the evolution of these products involves tracing their predecessors. If we strip away the "live" designation and revert to the use of dried and cured cannabis, we can trace the progression: Wax<Shatter<Crumble<Cured Resin<Live Resin For LIVE RESIN, the precursor was Cured Resin, blasted with butane just like Live Resin, but with dried cannabis materials. Prior to a cured resin, we saw our fair share of shatter, wax, crumble, and of course the secondary processing of distillates. Live Resin can be seen as a continuation of Cured Resin, distinguished by its use of frozen cannabis material. Bubble Hash<Flower Rosin<Live Rosin<Ice Water Hash Take the live   away from LIVE ROSIN and you just have rosin or "flower rosin" to be more specific. Unlike Live Resin, Live Rosin brought real progress to ancient methods, by combining previous bubble hash techniques with the rosin press to provide smokers with a product unlike anything before it (in terms of quality). Unlike live resin, Live Rosin combined techniques to create a Live Rosin product without a direct prior comparison. These latest styles represent a progression of techniques, with Live Rosin as the revolutionary product changing our ability to experience the plant. Achieving higher quality extracts than ever before, Live Rosin surpasses the chemical solvent possibilities to bring lovers of the plant closer to nature than ever before.  The genetic variety in the evolving market challenges the notion that certain strains are only viable for chemical solvent extraction. Built In Protocols Unlike chemical solvent extractions, which enable the producer to use trim, trash, scrap, and even contaminated biomass, solventless techniques require at least a baseline of quality cannabis flower material. Using only agitation and gravity to remove trichomes from the plant's surface (where they grow and reside), Live Rosin is NOT able to use poor quality materials like trim and bulk biomass the way chemical solvents allow. In a new industry, chemical solvents give agency to vast consumer manipulation. THE BHO TRUTH While BHO and Live Resin is able to be produced from the lowest of the low, a fairly high quality product is achievable with solvent extraction and Live Resin. One or two local companies usually employ solvents and make a high quality Live Resin from quality cannabis materials. The issue is, there’s almost no way to tell the difference between live resin from quality inputs versus live resin from trim and scraps. The CRC column enables any black sludge to become a bright yellow extract called Live Resin.  BUT IT WONT WASH! There are plenty who point to cannabis strains unwilling to yield anything useful under solventless techniques, claiming Live Resin and BHO to be the answer to those non-washable strains. As time has gone on, we've seen a never ending stream of new Live Rosin flavors, with no shortage of options in a constantly evolving market of genetic variety. The genetic variety in the evolving market challenges the notion that certain strains are only viable for chemical solvent extraction. Maybe some additional pheno-hunting is necessary for those difficult varieties or better yet, since there is so much overlap in our genetics that maybe it isn't worth growing if it only yields in chemical solvent extraction? Just a thought. In Conclusion Live Rosin stands out as a revolutionary product, pushing the boundaries of extract quality and changing the way we experience cannabis. The market's constant evolution offers a myriad of options, challenging assumptions about strains that were once considered unsuitable for solventless techniques. Rocking the charts as usual... In the end, both products are comprised of organic cannabis materials from the trichome glands. THC of course, CBD, and over 200 other cannabinoids have been discovered in the same trichome glands and may be included in the extract. In addition to cannabinoids, terpenes are also included. If you wanted to bad enough, you could call a distillate of pure THC mixed with food grade terpenes, LIVE RESIN with little repercussion. In the end the highest quality product and the aim is to preserve the natural trichome gland contents, delivering the full spectrum of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavanoids as they appear on the day of harvest. Ice Water Hash does it best, followed by Live Rosin. Let's hear your thoughts below...

After a few years on the hash and rosin racing circuit of Northern California, the pit-crew developed a list of consumer SOP's taking the top google search result queries. What a competitive edge that is, but there remain a few things missing and some areas to narrow in on. The guys at Terp Kooler were cool enough to send this fridge for critical analysis, and an updated word on solventless storage strategies. It isn't often that I'm pleasantly delighted. For all things cannabis related, expectations further decrease, making my newest Terp Library an astonishing surprise. Longtime followers will remember our budget mini-fridge from Target (which now lives in my car) and will be happy to hear she's still running beautifully. However, this Terp Kooler is a big upgrade, improving on almost everything the budget option entailed, including in many ways you would never have noticed without some first-hand use. Cannabis For Consumption Let us begin by reminding everyone that cannabis is both a living plant and a consumable. Not much different than lettuce, celery, or any other type of produce, the plant and its solventless products should be thought of and handled like food. While refrigeration is always recommended, several styles of hash rosin were formulated with shelf-stability in mind. Rosin Badder/Cold Cure/Rosin Jam or Rosin Sauce Things have simplified as we have reached a better understanding over the past several years. While your cold cure or rosin badder is best suited in refrigeration, it will not change in texture or appearance and will hold up outside of refrigeration whenever necessary. Rosin Jam does not require refrigeration, but again it’s recommended if or when possible. Rosin Jam is intended to be shelf stable and nothing will change or be noticeable either way. Cold storage for bulk purchases is recommended, as the Terp Kooler is perfect for these styles of rosin. Extinguish Condensation The Terp Kooler is King for all things Cold Cure Rosin Badder/Jam/Sauce and is perfect for maintaining your Library of Terps. Unlike the cheap mini fridge options that develop a good deal of condensation, the Terp Kooler stays bone dry. No more destroyed labels and packaging leading to mixed up jars or needing to sponge water from the bottom. Just in case it does create condensation, a small tray in the bottom keeps it away from your jars (those looking to increase the humidity can utilize this tray slot to introduce more moisture into the air). Small things that make for effective use go a long way. Beautifully Displayed Terps The addition of several glass shelves differentiate the bottom from the lowest shelf and provides a stunning display for your jars. It also has three shelves unlike cheaper models. The Terp Kooler also comes with an internal light controlled by a button on the door. Altogether it makes for a beautiful display of everything inside. For the impeccable quality of modern hash, the Terp Kooler is quite fitting to house and show off your precious resins. Right next to the light button are temperature controls. It’s recommended that you keep it on the coldest settings as temperatures range from 46℉ on up. Testing the fridge with a kitchen thermometer, it stays just under 49℉. This is perfect for maintaining all styles of rosin mentioned above. Convenient Charging Points Before covering storage for fresh press rosin and ice water hash, the three USB ports on top of the Terp Kooler appeared to have little use at first. Once I realized its the perfect set up to hold and charge my temp devices, they became a favorite feature. Since cords to these devices are only a couple of inches long, the top of the Terp Kooler is the perfect place to charge Dab Rites, Terpometers, Temp Devices, E-rigs, and even my LED lights. Look for USB-C additions in future models. Fresh Pressed Rosin (Still Clear) & Ice Water Hash (Fresh) The Difficult Versions Other than ice water hash, no other style of rosin demands refrigeration quite like fresh press rosin . That is, when its still fresh. Mere moments outside of refrigeration is enough for the cure to begin, where the rosin begins to harden and turn to a solid shade of tan or white. Ice Water hash undergoes a similar effect with trichomes melting together. The urgent need for cold storage stems from these two styles of hash & rosin. A Frozen Plan In order to preserve the clear and translucent Fresh Pressed Rosin or Ice Water Hash, refrigeration was recommended, but freezing is the new ideal . Anyone planning to hang on to fresh press rosin or ice water hash for a duration of time would be wise to simply freeze them, rather than hoping your fridge stays cold enough. Frozen, Fresh Press rosin and Ice Water Hash retain starting appearances for as long as you need. The Perfect Prep The Terp Kooler is just cold enough to maintain fresh press rosin or ice water hash for a matter of weeks, making for a perfect second stage preparation. Holding a temperature just under fifty degrees F, it will allow a slow cure over a period of about two-to-three weeks, depending on the genetics of the fresh press rosin or ice water hash. Any fresh press you intend to consume within the following week or two would be perfectly suited for storage directly in the Terp Kooler. Bulk purchases would be wise to freeze and keep only your smoking stock of these styles on deck. Terp Kooler to Defrost Working with something we consume, look at it from a culinary perspective. Best practices say to thaw food slowly in cool water or refrigeration. Rather than leaving frozen hash or rosin sitting at room temperature (or my pocket), it's better to place the frozen jar in refrigeration and allow it to slowly thaw overnight. I place all of my hash and rosin in the Terp Kooler directly from the freezer, that I plan to consume in the days and weeks to follow. Freezing, thawing, and refreezing is never recommended for meat, so I do the same for rosin. A slow thaw appears to allow the rosin to vape more effectively and I avoid re-freezing fresh press rosin. I do the same with ice water hash, relying on the Terp Kooler alone after the first defrost. *Keep in mind this applies to single gram jars. Buddered Fresh Press Rosin & Greased Hash Likewise, once that rosin has solidified, there's no going back. You can certainly #baddertech the dried rosin into a more enjoyable and pleasing badder form, but the clear look of the fresh press rosin will not return. At this point refrigeration is still recommended, however a noticeable change will not occur. Jars of fresh press rosin that have warmed up at any point along the supply line will already be buddered over, leaving little reason to rush that rosin home to the fridge. Ice Water Hash While refrigeration used to be recommended for new jars of Ice Water Hash, it’s best to simply freeze them. Freezing ice water hash keeps it in pristine form, while refrigeration allows the trichomes heads to slowly melt. Leave your ice water hash frozen and let it thaw in the Terp Kooler overnight where it will be ready to dab. It will be interesting to see how freezing, thawing, and refreezing effects the hash and is something to consider. The elimination of condensation within the fridge makes it a much more comfortable setting to house and thaw your precious ice water hash. Summary For most styles of rosin, the Terp Kooler is a brainless solution to all your storage needs. For fresh press rosin and ice water hash, the Terp Kooler is perfect for priming your rosin, short-term storage, and use in combination with a freezer. Moving your frozen hash and fresh press to the Terp Kooler, keeps these prime for daily use until finished. Taking these tips, the Terp Kooler comes highly recommended and is a nice addition to your dabs. *Be sure to subscribe and check back as we will update this article and do a 6 month or yearly review. #Terpkooler #hashwriter #baddertech #humboldt #hash #hashmonkey #hash #money #rosin #dollars #strain #buyersguide #solventless #hasheducation ##copywriter #hashwriter #cannabiswriter #uc #photography #cannabis #icehash #6star hashwriter #hream #strains #phenotypes #710labs #710labsflower #hash #rosin #solventless #cannabis #hashwriter #mothership #KV #icehash #sixstar #macro #concentrates #hashlife #hashonomics #terps #terpenes #organic #ogsmakebetterog #hashlane #terps #societ y #cannabiscures #medicalcannabis #love #community #joint #cannabisgrow #terpenes

I've spoken at length about the dynamics of dabbing temperatures , storage , and brands, but never really covered the basics that many online may wonder. Here's exactly what you must have to smoke or dab hash and hash rosin. I'll lay out the easiest, most efficient methods and tools to effectively consume hash and rosin (like a motherfucker). Prepare to experience cannabis and explore it's many cultivars, like never before. Dabbing Necessities The Torch The first thing you need, yes, it's a torch. A new torch and a can of butane, as the torch usually comes empty. There's a few different models, but the mainstay is the Blazer Big Shot and any grade of butane fuel will do. Newport Torches used to be my favorite, but I don't see them as much anymore. You can usually get your torch at a head-shop where you will probably need to go for your glass. Otherwise, Amazon is the spot. We use butane torches to heat the quartz "banger" up and then allow it to cool to the proper temperature, before inserting a "dab" of hash or rosin. Using traditional lighters to heat up the quartz will not work and cover your quartz banger in nasty black soot. Propane torches will work, but I advise against using propane, unless it's the only thing you have. Smaller torches and pocket torches may work depending on your set-up. There are a few smaller and mid-range torches available that are a lot less intimidating to use than the Blazer Big Shot, but take a bit longer to heat. You will get used to the torch fast, don't be scared. The Glass You can spend as much or as little as you want on glass and the market has a range of products for everyone. When it comes to smoking full melt hash and live rosin remember that smaller is better , making it much more affordable to find a quality glass piece. You will choose from a 10 mm or 14 mm female opening at either a 45-or-90-degree angle. These numbers tell you what size quartz banger will fit your piece (10mm or 14mm) and the angle it will sit (14mm at 90 degrees is standard). You can usually find something basic and small for under or around a hundred bucks. The smaller rigs allow the smoke to expand within the lungs rather than expanding and touching additional glass surfaces. It is perfectly OK to use your old bong or bubbler if necessary, but a small 6 to 8 inch tall dab rig is ideal. Nothing fancy is required and almost any glass piece with a removable slide or bowl-piece can work. The Quartz A quartz banger is probably the most important part of smoking hash and is the new "bowl-piece" or "slide" you could say. The quartz banger is the part you will torch until hot, and then put the dab in as it is cooling. It is the direct surface you place your hash or rosin on, in other words. My normal glass dab rig or piece cost about 150 bucks, but my quartz banger was $220 alone. You can see where the priority lies but you can often find solid brands making standard quality quartz for fifty dollars or less. There's plenty of five, ten, and twenty dollar quartz bangers that I recommend avoiding and trying to find some of the mid-priced stuff. These super-cheap China quartz generics can get the job done if need be, but there are plenty of quality-handmade products in the mid-range of pricing. Brands such as Bear Quartz, Monark Glass, and AFM make quality quartz for around thirty to forty bucks. Heat retention and dispersion is important, but I've found any grade of quartz will do, but the kicker is the shape. Improperly shaped bangers lead to problems with the next item you will need. Spending on high-end quartz will help ensure a well-shaped and perfectly-round quartz banger. A Buyer's Guide to quartz is here . The Carb-Cap Still clinging to its old name from the early BHO wax days, the "carburetor cap," or carb-cap is another dabbing necessity, that now makes all the sense in the world. It appeared unnecessary to me coming from the wax and crumble days, but I was wrong. For adequate and efficient dabs the carb cap is a crucial necessity for several reasons. For one, it increases the temperature within the quartz banger, causing it to vaporize through convection, while the cap also works to move the dab around inside of the banger. Some "spinner" caps come with a spinning output of air that can spin an optional "terp pearl" or small bead inside your banger. Personally, all the spinning toys and odds and ends in use are largely an aesthetic extra when used with a traditional style and shape of quartz banger. With or without terp-pearls, the carb cap is still needed to take functional dabs. I prefer a simple and standard bubble-cap with a long thin snout for added pressure build-up. Having a well-shaped banger and cap creates a seal for pressure to build. This is where those cheap bangers and caps can fail, without making for an effective suction and seal. The Tool This one could be filed under optional, as almost anything can make due. For the regular dabber a nice dab tool is a smart purchase. You will need some type of tool able to scrape some hash or rosin from its jar, and apply it to the hot quartz surface. Steel or titanium has been the preferred material, but glass and other versions of dab tools do exist. You can easily pay thirty or forty dollars for a dab tool, or pick-up whatever generic brand the smoke shop offers for more like five bucks. Q-Tips Clean your quartz after every dab with a q-tip, or don't and find out why its listed under necessities for yourself! Optional Items Temperature Device To some this may be a necessity, but as someone to dab and dab daily for years without a temperature device, I don't recommend it, but it is possible to do with a timer . With that being said, buy yourself a Terpometer as soon as possible. It has eliminated error and dialed in my dabbing routine to where I can make five to ten degree adjustments that are accurate and consistent every time. These temperature devices take the guesswork out of dabbing and are a luxury to have. For just twenty or thirty bucks you can find infrared thermometer guns on Amazon that will do the job as well if not better than some of these desktop designs, costing hundreds of dollars. (Once you acquire a temp. reader, this here article is for you .) Terp-Pearls Terp Pearls are like small marbles made from different materials and intended to provide a bit more heat retention, while working to spin and evenly vaporize the hash or rosin. It's been quite the cash grab from glass artists, selling marbles and small pearls for hundreds of dollars each. They are just too much for me to keep up with and constantly clean to become a regular part of my routine. Punch hooked me up with a terp pearl as seen below: New Quartz Options Recently a new quartz option has appeared and caught on fast called, the Terp Slurper. These " slurpers" and "blenders" require some sort of stationary cap, like a marble, that doesn't allow air to flow through it. Instead the air is pulled in from the bottom and into an upward spinning vortex. For Terp Slurpers, "terp-pearls" and marbles are necessary, as they completely change the function, helping to increase pressure when used as intended. Speaking of pressure, it is important for both styles of quartz to increase the pressure while inhaling, causing the hash or rosin to vaporize at significantly lower temperatures. The better the products, the better the seal. Electric Options New electric and portable dab rigs have appeared that I recommend for brand new consumers. Otherwise, I would only use these for on the go and other situations that necessitate speed and ease of use. E-nails on the other hand, that can be plugged in and keep your banger at a consistent temperature are highly ideal in replacing a torch. If you have the means, E-nails that heat quartz shaped like a usual "banger," are the ones I recommend. Wrap Up With the necessities you are well on your way to experiencing cannabis like never before. There has never been a better method to explore cannabis cultivars and their different sensory profiles than with modern hash and hash rosin. If you have not experienced the euphoric joy and unadulterated taste of pure trichomes, you’re in for a real treat, as these products are the best of what cannabis has to offer. Everything You Need To Smoke Ice Water Hash and Live Hash Rosin

Everything you need to effectively consume Ice Water Hash and Live Hash Rosin like a pro and some optional luxuries for the modern user.

Sep 9, 2021

With the immense scrutiny required to reap the rewards of solventless hash, the ultimate experience relies heavily on its end user. A great batch of hash rosin can quickly be ruined by consuming it at temperatures too hot, while those precious and flavorful extra-low-temperature dabs can leave something to be desired. Finding the perfect temperature will maximize the effectiveness of the dab. We have written extensively on temperatures and tools , while this article provides a Step-By-Step guide to taking the perfect dabs of hash rosin. JUMP TO: Tools Needed To Dab Dabbing Explained (theory) Too Hot, Too Cold Step 1: Heating Your Quartz STEP 3: TEMPS & TIMING POST DAB: KEYS TO LOOK FOR CHART TOOLS Required TO DAB 1. Hash Pipe (Holds your quartz banger) 2. Quartz Banger 3. Carb-Cap/Bubble-Cap/Spinner-Cap (Fit to banger) 4. Dab Tool 5. Hand-Torch & Butane 6.Temperature Reading Device/Timer 7. Q-Tips/Alcohol (For Necessary Clean-Up) OPTIONAL 8. Terp Pearls/Beads SETUP HASH PIPE AND PRACTICE RUN Once you have your set-up, fill your hand torch with butane and put a couple of inches of water in the bottom of your hash-pipe. Insert your quartz banger into the fitting attached to your glass hash-pipe. Go ahead and place the carb cap on top of your banger and take a few good practice inhales. It’s good to test the function and know what to expect before attempting to take the first dab. Now that you aren’t about to suck a mouthful of water when hitting the pipe, remove the carb cap and set it aside. DABBING THEORY EXPLAINED The difficulty in dabbing usually stems from a lack of understanding the basic premise or objective. To cut through much of the confusion, a theoretical explanation will help make sense of the tools used and the technique. In theory, we heat up the quartz element with the torch and then allow enough time to pass for the quartz to cool down to the ideal temperature range. Once the quartz has cooled to the proper high temperature mark (about 550℉), we place a small amount of rosin inside the quartz element with our dab tool, place the Carb cap on the banger, and inhale until it cools. Simple enough, in theory anyways… TOO HOT The difficulty arises in judging the proper temperature of your quartz before inserting the dab. Placing the dab of rosin into the banger too soon after torching, means it's still too hot and will burn the dab. A burnt dab not only tastes terribly, but destroys valuable terpenes and detracts from the quality-effects of the dab. It’s always best to err on the side of caution, going in too cold, rather than too hot. TOO COLD Placing your dab in the banger too late means it’s too cold. You will only receive a light vapor, rather than a dense vapor similar to smoke. Dabbing too cold prevents all of the cannabinoids and terpenes from vaporizing efficiently. A cold dab can be reheated for a few seconds however, while there’s no coming back from burnt terps. Step By Step Dabbing Guide 1. HEATING YOUR QUARTZ* With your glass pipe sitting and the quartz banger attached, fire up your torch and proceed to heat your quartz banger from all sides. About thirty seconds on the bottom and another 15 to 20 seconds heating the sides is plenty. Turn the torch off and set it aside. *TORCH TIPS * Remove carb-cap prior to torching. *If you choose to use Terp pearls, insert them into the banger prior to torching. *Try not to torch the glass of your hash pipe, focusing the flame on the quartz attachment alone. Use caution. *While torching, keep the tip about 2-3 inches away from the quartz. *You can leave the hash-pipe sitting on the table while torching, or hold the pipe in one hand while holding the torch in the other. This will make it easier to torch under the banger/slurper. *Glowing red quartz is hotter than necessary. 2. SCOOP A DAB Open your jar of hash rosin, scoop a small amount of rosin onto your dab tool, (so it's ready to go) and set it aside. To help gauge size, you should get about 8 to 10 dabs from one gram of rosin. Start small. *REMEMBER: You want your rosin nearly room temperature before dabbing. 3. NOW WE WAIT... TEMPERATURES OR TIMING Depending on your method, we now wait for the quartz banger to cool to the proper high-temperature mark. The idea is to place the dab into the quartz at the highest possible temperature without causing it to burn. The closer you start to the high temperature mark, the longer the duration of the dab. Feel free to dance during cool-down. It's our preferred method of waiting...
TEMPERATURE READING DEVICES Considering you invested in a temperature device, position the sensor on the bottom of your quartz and wait until the quartz falls below 550℉, beginning the dab at the ideal temperature of 500℉. These temperature devices can be a bit tricky to figure out and replicate results with, so be sure to rely on the KEYS TO LOOK FOR in combination with the supposed temperature reading as you dial in future dabs. (The exact temperature can vary based on what temperature reading tool you are using, which is covered here . 550F using the touch-sensor Terpometer, often looks more like 450F using an infrared style device. 500F is the happy medium.) TIMe Your Dabs For many who do not own a temperature device, fear not, as we lived without them for years. The solution is a timer. As soon as you are finished heating your quartz element with a torch, start the timer. You can get fairly accurate and consistent results this way. It is helpful to refill your torch prior to each use and time how long you torch the quartz, as well. A usable example (for American-made or similarly shaped quartz)and a good place to begin, looks something like this: Torch quartz for 30 seconds (with a full torch). Wait 100-115 seconds. Apply the Dab TIMING TIPS: Many of today’s bangers have started to stabilize, but each brand and style of quartz will have different cool down times. Having torched your quartz for 30 seconds, it will require at least 90 seconds to reach the desired temperature for most brands and styles of American-made quartz. 4. APPLY THE DAB With your dab tool and rosin in hand, insert it into the quartz banger’s bucket. You will be applying the rosin directly to the hot quartz surface with your dab tool. We like to press the dab up against the inner walls of the quartz banger allowing it to melt off the tool and puddle in the banger's bucket. Set your tool aside. 5. APPLY CARB-CAP Immediately place the carb-cap on your quartz banger and inhale. Depending on the style of carb cap, some spin the oil within the banger automatically (spinners), while other directional style caps allow the user to push the rosin around during the dab by articulating the carb-cap like a joystick. 6. INHALE - EXHALE Rather than one long and slow inhalation practical for “pulling tube,” or "ripping the bong", rosin dabs provide for several faster inhales and exhales. Since the oils are only in the proper temperature range for a short duration of time, it's practical to take several faster hits, before the quartz cools. Ideally, you can make a full inhale and full exhale two to three times per dab. 7. RINSE AND REPEAT Q-tip the excess oils immediately after each use, or use the dunk-tech and submerge the still warm quartz into alcohol, rinse, and dry. You will see right away the disastrous effects of not cleaning your quartz after and in between each use, when you attempt to heat it again. It will require about a minute or two of direct torch heat to clean and clear-up a dirty and stained banger. Every now and then this becomes a requirement even when q-tipping between uses. It’s referred to as “burning-off” the excess and creates quite a bit of unwelcome smoke. 8. JUDGE & ADJUST Whether using a temperature device or a timer, the KEYS TO LOOK FOR can tell you how accurate your temperature device is and/or the effectiveness of your timed dabs. Try changing temperatures by ten to twenty degrees (or by ten to fifteen seconds) as needed for future dabs. KEYS TO LOOK FOR: TOO HOT TOO COLD No remaining liquid in the quartz. All flavor, no smoke. Dark stains that appear to be burnt into the quartz and cannot be q-tipped away Thin or very light vapor from the very start If the vapor suddenly stops or cuts-off abruptly during the first inhale Equally as much oil remains leftover as was applied with the dab Poor and burnt taste Light yellow oil remains after the dab Char or Blackened Oil Remnants CORRECT RESULTS About ⅔ or a third of each dab remains puddled in a dark brown oil. The oil remains visible and is spun or pushed around as you inhale. Dense vapor for more than one inhalation, that subsides with each additional hit. An effectively taken dab should taste incredible, as an unadulterated cannabis experience that provides only the plant's trichome glands, rich with terpenes and additional cannabinoids. A nearly candy-like taste is expected on fruity or sweet sounding strains, while unflinching gas can be surprising. This is the new cannabis world and it is run by hashish. [Cork-Back Hash Pipe Coasters, 12 x 12 inch Metal Prints, Posters, and More. Hit the Store right Here or in MENU. ] To Conclude Just remember, other than searing and frying your rosin on red hot quartz, there’s really no "right" or "wrong way" and desired temperatures are often a matter of preference and choice. That being said, the range of appropriate temperatures is fairly narrow (400℉-550℉ ) and the point of no return lies merely a few degrees over the desired high temperature mark of 550℉. The science we have explored in prior articles and the reasons why, right here. Keep in mind the size of your dab, with higher temperatures needed for big globs and lower temperatures for much smaller dabs. With a long history of confusion, misinformation, and deception, the ease and simplicity of the modern solventless process, along with the precision achieved is truly mind blowing. It's as if we are growing two or even three plants simultaneously, rather than just one... First, we grew cannabis plants for their flowers. Most of the plant material was scrapped (or used for BHO), while the buds or flowers sold for top dollar. We know now the real prized possession isn't the plant or its flowers, but rather, what's growing from their surfaces: While the solventless method is fairly new, anyone who understands the plant and it's trichome structure, can logically comprehend ice water hash and the solventless refinement process (trichome structure explained later). The goal of which, aims to remove, isolate, and preserve ONLY the round head of each trichome gland, using only ice and water. Trichome Glands (Capitate-Stalked) These trichomes begin to appear at the start of the flowering stage (just like the flowers) and have been our measure of readiness, harvesting plants based upon inspection and the color of the plant's trichome glands. Despite farmers paying close attention to the trichomes for decades, they've been largely ignored after harvest until recent years. The graphic below illustrates the start of the flowering period (roughly 30 to 60 days in) through harvest, when trichomes mature and start to exhibit a milky, white, and amber hue to their heads: Ice Water Hash/Trichome Anatomy Six-star ice water hash (the highest grade), when perfected, is a jar consisting of only the round heads from each trichome gland (free of the trichome stems even!) (See Ex.2). Knowing what is contained in each trichome from Example 1, here's a more realistic anatomy of a single trichome gland: Since everything pertinent to cannabis is contained within the plant's trichomes, the goal of hash-making is to remove and preserve them. Simple enough? Well we have known this much for decades, however the idea of removing and preserving these trichomes was a bit beyond us. The best we could do is blast the plant with chemical solvents and hope to recover as much of the dissolved and destroyed trichomes as possible. With these two factoids well digested: Everything desirable to the high, effect, & therapeutic properties of cannabis reside entirely within the plant's trichome gland heads. Ice Water Hash is made up of whole trichome gland heads. Let's turn back to a cannabis flower... Most plants require 60 to 90 days from the start of flowering until harvest. Having eliminated the male plants early on, females ramp-up trichome production. Energy normally exerted toward reproduction and seed growth, goes instead to all-out, resinous trichome growth. A Maturing Bud of Cannabis By the end of the flowering period, trichomes become visible to the naked eye. A closer look, preferably under some magnification will reveal a dense abundance of trichomes covering every available surface of the plant. Below is a zoomed in look at the surface of our almost mature cannabis flower (above), covered in ripe trichomes: The graphics should give you a good idea of what, when, and where trichomes develop. The plant is cut down and immediately frozen on the farm. Freezing the plant locks valuable terpenes into the frozen trichome heads, and helps us refine them. The Wash Frozen cannabis is transported from the farm to the lab and put in a 220 micron mesh "work bag". In the mesh bag, the frozen cannabis is lowered into a bath of ice and water. The mesh bag only allows material smaller than 220 microns to fall through and while the plant material is apt to float, the densely resinous trichome heads will sink and settle to the bottom. The frozen trichomes will naturally break free from their stems and the plant material by agitating and stirring the frozen cannabis wash. The bulk cannabis material can easily be removed from the water in the mesh work bag. The water (containing only trichomes and minor debris smaller than 220 microns) is then poured through a series of increasingly finer mesh filters (think cheese-cloth), separating trichomes from the water by size. Spooned directly off the mesh bags and onto metal trays, the trichomes are placed in the commercial freeze drier and we're smoking hash by tomorrow! As the trichomes are dried using sublimation in pharmaceutical freeze dryers, the resulting effect is a hardened patty of trichome heads. This hard and dry material is put through a normal kitchen sieve to achieve the fine sand-like consistency as depicted by @papas_select in the video below: This is all accomplished in refrigerated rooms and after the ice water hash is weighed and put into jars, it’s returned to the freezer. From the wilderness of a Humboldt cannabis farm, breathing fresh air and taking in sunlight, those same trichome glands grow to maturity, are cut-down, and frozen in place. They will remain that way until you open the jar and let those trichomes thaw for the first time since leaving the farm. Conclusion Solventless hash has changed the landscape of cannabis for the better and will continue to influence cannabis consumption in more ways than this writing can express. It's the answer to many of my "corporate" concerns. It's the great equalizer, without the enormous start-up cost or use of dangerous solvents and serves as the "Acid Test" for the highest quality of cannabis. If you thought we were only after THC, think again, as we're after so much more... Part 2 Coming Soon, where I will show you what happens when the hash isn't a perfect six-star melt and requires an additional process to curate live hash rosin . #humboldtkinefarms #humboldtkine #humboldtcountycannabis #humboldthash #humboldtkinehash #livingsoil #sungrown #hash #rosin #solventless #singlesource #ogsmakebetterog #qualityovereverything #transparency #cannabis #concentrates #extracts #hashrosin #ROsinbudder #rosinbadder #zberries #zuboff #hashrosin #surveillancecapitalism #weed #hashwriter #weedwriter #OG #hream #fingertech #baddertech #hashonomics

The Life of a Cannabis Trichome Gland-Illustrated; Part One: Living That Best Life at 6-Stars

The Life of a Trichome Gland Illustrated. Learn Ice Water Hash and Trichomes through graphic images and detailed explanations...

Jan 1, 2022

After being forced to refrain from "the plant" for years, I went through the re-learning process of dabbing and found very little help anywhere. I'll lay out some of my guiding indicators, you could say, to figuring out how to hit the perfect rosin dab without owning a temperature tool . But first, what is the perfect dab? Dabbing Too Cold It's become evident many are dabbing at temperatures so low everything fails to vaporize. Is it delicious and an enjoyable dab at temperatures of 450 or less? Of course, but does it effectively vaporize everything? No, I do not believe so. In my article on Dab Temperatures, I laid out the science behind cannabis vaporization and the temperatures at which cannabinoids and terpenes are proven to vaporize . THC-a vaporizes at the high temperature mark of 430 degrees F., so while a beginning dab temperature of 450 gets close, it just doesn't provide the full effects I'm looking for. Dabbing Too Hot Dabbing too hot causes THC to convert to CBN (cannabinol), which induces sleep and a heavier high. For nearly a decade, my dabs increase in temperature as the day goes on, knowing about this conversion . Those 450 temps work for my day-time dabs, but as the day grows old, slightly increased temperatures have always created a heavier high for me. Weedmaps says, "CBN is something of a “sleeper” cannabinoid" and that THC also turns to CBN over extended periods of time. Good enough for me. Skeptical Science I always look for sources and references for my facts, but I've become increasingly skeptical of who is writing and with what science. Our research and studies are decades old, performed on lab rats, and god only knows with what starting cannabis material. I trust my experience. We could always grab temps from the first Google search result, that says the following: "The medium temperature for dabbing is around 700°F." Yeah, if you like to scorch and ruin every single dab you take. Thanks Yo Dabba Dabba . While something around 450 is slightly too low, you never want to dab any type of concentrate over 600 degrees F, and even that is extremely hot. Conflicting Methods Confuse What has struck me currently is that temperatures are being discussed, and even argued, despite entirely different systems and set-ups. 450 may be too low for a quartz banger that will quickly decrease in temperature compared to an e-nail, that maintains a steady temperature of 450. Furthermore, the quality of quartz and the use of inserts or even terp pearls cause a banger to cool off much slower. With traditional dab tech, you could start at a lower temperature than someone else, if you are using inserts to help maintain heat. There are a ton of elements that alter beginning temps, but 450-550 is the correct range. No temp device? Here ya go..... You finally decided there was something to this and splurged on an 85 dollar gram of hash or rosin. You either decided you wanted to smoke big-fat, delicious melt-shots of clear gooey rosin-globs or make flags of six star, full-melt hash with the big-boys... eh? Or you just realized six star ice water hash and rosin is just too incredible not to try. Regardless, you made the correct decision and narrowed in on the pinnacle product of cannabis refinement. Grab your quartz and torch and let's go. For the newest of New-News: While there's a ton of toys and different techniques, the usual method is as follows: Torch the piss out of your quartz, until its glowing red or just about. Wait until the quartz banger cools down to between 550 to 450 degrees F. (depending upon the type of concentrate). Using some kind of tool, scoop a dab from the jar and place it inside the hot quartz banger. Immediately place some sort of cap over the quartz banger. Inhale- (While inhaling you can turn the bubble cap to push the oil around the quartz) Exhale Grab a Q-Tip - While everyone tries to avoid the q-tip tech at first, it's not optional. Once you take a few dabs you will see why. The banger will turn black, smoke like crazy, and require several minutes of direct torching before burning off the prior dab. Q-tipping after each dab will prevent a ton of wasted butane, a lot of nasty black burning smoke, and allow you to taste your hash, while it vaporizes efficiently. Wasted Dabs Defined You might waste some hash. Let's get that out of the way so you don't get all crazy about things. Even a "wasted" dab will still get you high. My definition of a "wasted dab" is one that is far too hot, causing the dab to smoke briefly for a second or two, before burning into your quartz. If your dab only smokes for a second and no oil remains to q-tip, it's burnt. It's going to take a few dabs to dial things in, but if you aren't burning your hash into the quartz, we can work with that. You can always re-torch a cool dab for a few seconds here and there, but there's no coming back from a scorching hot dab. Timing Time your torch. It's as simple as that. Time how long you torch your quartz banger for, and time how long you wait before dabbing. If I always torch for thirty seconds, I know to wait 1:35-1:40 seconds before dabbing. This is the best way to find some consistency in your routine. A key to timing the dab is to fill your torch with butane before every use, so you are getting a consistent flame. I usually torch for 45 seconds and allow 1:45 to 1:55 before dabbing. This is by far the best way to find some consistency in your method. The key is to start low, where you are q-tipping a yellow oil after the dab. You want the leftover oil to be a dark shade of brown, but not black or combusted into the atmosphere. Points of Reference After a while you will be able to gauge how hot your dab was by the color of the oil remaining. Dabs that leave a light-yellow oil behind can be hit with the torch for a few more seconds and inhaled again. Re-torching a dab, there's a distinct line to cross when suddenly it loses all flavor and begins to taste noticeably burnt. This is how you know you got every bit from the dab, before it crosses over and begins to burn. By timing your torch and cool downs, you will be able to dial in your dabs as close as you can to this perfect level of full vaporization. The Perfect Dab To define what the perfect dab is: The perfect dab is one that effectively vaporizes all terpenes, cannabinoids, and flavonoids, without anything of a burnt taste. If you have the money to waste, you can sacrifice the efficiency of each dab in exchange for maximum flavor. This way it might take a few extra dabs to receive the full effects. For the rest of us, full-flavor and full effect is the idea behind every dab. It's one hit at the highest possible temperature (550 usually), without converting THC-a to CBN, or noticeably burning the terpenes. With experience, you will learn each variety of cannabis and variety of concentrate changes the desired temps slightly, but in theory, the objectives remain the same.
